Eat like a firefighter!

I love Netflix!  For 7.99 a month I can watch tons of great movies and my favorites are Food, Inc, Food Matters, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, Forks Over Knives, and today my husband and I watched The Engine 2 Kitchen Rescue.  The movie is about Rip Esselstyn, (son of Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D. author of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease) who is a firefighter and a vegan.  Rip goes to 2 different families and does a menu makeover that suits the particular lifestyles of each family.  The first family was a married couple in their late 50s/early 60s and he showed them how to redo burgers and fries and also lasagna.  The second family was a married couple with 4 children.  He showed them how to redo cereal, sandwiches, pizza and ice cream..... all vegan!  In keeping with many of the videos and websites I mention on this blog, this is part of the plant-based diet movement that is sweeping this country.

I hope that you enjoy the video and the website http://engine2diet.com/

Moroccan Food

My good friend Jane treated me to lunch at a Moroccan restaurant in the Westport area of Kansas City called the Marrakesh Cafe.  I fell in love with the food.  We had the sampler plate that had 3 dips, one made of eggplant, one made of peppers and one of carrots.  This was served with warm, soft flat bread...think pita but really fresh and tender.  It was wonderful.  I am definitely going back.

I was searching online for recipes for the above dishes and I came across a recipe website I would like to recommend.

A Bit of Fun

A student in my face2face A&P class sent me this link: http://www.candyboots.com/wwcards.html.  It is a blog page and one of the posts has this slide show of Weight Watchers menu cards from the 1970s.  It is hilarious and frightening to see what was conisdered low-cal, let alone even food back then.

Thanks to Vicki Takacs for sending it to me.

Enjoy!

GoDairyFree.Org

Yummy recipes!  This website was given to me by one of my students in my online Dietary Nutrition class.  Right on the home page is this recipe for Orange-Scented Olive, Parsley and Sun-Dried Tomato Tapenade.  For those who have never had tapenade, it is a party in your mouth!  Very intense and savory.  I cannot wait to try this recipe!

Check it out even if you don't want to go dairy free!  In addition to dairy-free, there are gluten-free, soy-free recipes and others.
